Georgia assistant Pearson a finalist for Sun Belt job

ATHENS - Mark Fox could lose his top assistant coach: Philip Pearson interviewed earlier this week for the head coaching job at Arkansas Little-Rock.

Pearson has been the top assistant since Fox came to Georgia six years ago. Prior to that Pearson was a longtime assistant to Mark Gottfried at Alabama, his alma mater, and Pearson served as interim head coach for the final half of the 2008-09 season after Gottfried's firing.

Pearson was the lead recruiter for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the top recruit of the Fox era. He also ran lead on Kenny Gaines, and two of the team's 2016 recruits: Guards Jordan Harris and Tyree Crump.

The Arkansas Little-Rock job opened up last month when the school fired Steve Shields after 12 seasons as head coach. The Trojans, who play in the Sun Belt conference, went 13-18 this past season.

Pearson is one of five finalists for the job, the Arkansas Little-Rock coach announced Thursday in a tweet. The others: Darrell Walker, a former NBA assistant coach; Joe Kleine, a former NBA player who was on Shields' staff; Bowling Green assistant Mark Downey; Angelo State head coach Chris Beard.
