Richt laughs off retirement rumors

CHARLOTTE - Mark Richt is entering a brief period where a lot has to be done, including the hire of an offensive coordinator, an offensive line coach, and hold on to his current assistants.

And yes, Richt will be the one making those decisions, he said Tuesday, despite rumors that he would be leaving after the bowl.

Richt smiled and laughed when asked where the rumors, and said "I have no idea" when asked how they got started.

"That's the plan," Richt said when asked if he was returning for a 15th year. "You can go ask the team."

He then turned to freshman tailback Nick Chubb, seated behind him.

"Nick, did I retire?" Richt said.

Chubb laughed, as did reporters.

Richt does have to hire a new coordinator to replace Mike Bobo, now the head coach at Colorado State, as well as offensive line coach to replace Will Friend, now the offensive coordinator at CSU.

Richt offered no timetable when asked about the hires.

"When we find the right people," he said.

Tight ends coach John Lilly, who called the offensive plays on Tuesday, sidestepped whether he was interested in becoming the coordinator.

"Honestly I'm not worried about that right now. Tonight's not about that," Lilly said. "Tonight's about our seniors and about this football team and what they did. That's about all I've worried about all week."
