The Mercer Bears worked out in shells (helmets and shoulder pads) for the first time during the preseason Friday.
“The pads added another dimension to our practice,” head coach Bobby Lamb said. “We can simulate live drills that can’t be done with just helmets only. Overall, though, we added a lot plays (Friday) morning and got a lot of good snaps in the team period, which will be an invaluable teaching tool when reviewing video in our afternoon meetings.”
The Bears’ 26-period workout included individual position work and special teams drills before wrapping up with offense and defense scrimmage drills.
“We are looking for a little cleaner practice tomorrow from a technique standpoint in our new plays and formations,” Lamb said. “Once we get our full gear on we can tackle guys to the ground, which is real positive since the defense can work tackling and the offense can cut block.”
