Mercer women’s basketball schedule released

Mercer’s women’s basketball team begins its conference schedule in its second season in the Southern Conference in early January with a three-game road trip, but before the Bears get to that point, they face a difficult non-conference schedule.

Mercer’s schedule that was released Friday includes December non-conference games at Georgia, Kennesaw State and Florida State, along with an appearance in Georgia State’s Thanksgiving tournament. The Bears open their season Nov. 13 against Coastal Georgia.

The Bears also host Georgia Southern in November.

Mercer opens its Southern Conference schedule Jan. 7 with a road trip to UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina and Samford. The conference home opener is Jan. 21 against Chattanooga.

“Our schedule this year is very similar to last year’s schedule in that we simply flip-flopped home and away games,” head coach Susie Gardner said. “We did add Florida State and the Georgia State Classic, and I’m excited about playing in Atlanta over Thanksgiving because we have so many players from the Atlanta area. It will definitely be a great test for us before we begin our Southern Conference play.”

Gardner is entering her sixth season with the program. The Bears have reached 20 wins in two of the past three seasons. This year’s roster includes seven freshmen, six sophomores and one junior. Sophomore Kahlia Lawrence was last year’s Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.

The Southern Conference tournament will be played March 4-7 in Asheville, North Carolina.
