Local briefs: Mercer visiting The Citadel; Bobcats, Wolves honored

Mercer on road against The Citadel

Mercer will try to maintain its lead in Southern Conference baseball when it visits The Citadel.

The three-game series in Charleston, South Carolina begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The Bears are 18-12 overall and 5-1 in conference play while the Bulldogs are 14-13 and 0-3.

The Citadel has a 10-5 series lead over Mercer, which has won five of the past seven games.

Senior Connor Walsh leads the Bulldogs with a .360 average and 30 RBI.

Mercer will face a pair of lefties in the first two games, James Reeves and JP Sears.

The Citadel will get Eric Nyquist (4-1, 2.15 ERA) and Grant Papelian (3-1, 3.82) in the first two.

Sophomore Kyle Lewis leads the nation with 10 homers and 92 total bases, and is among the conference leaders in average (.382), runs (31) and RBI (26).

Mercer visits Georgia Tech on Tuesday, and returns home for a conference series against Western Carolina next weekend.

Georgia College athletes honored by conference

Pitcher Cameron Busby and men’s tenns player Yannick Hass of Georgia College were named Peach Belt Conference players of the week.

Busby is the latest conference baseball freshman of the week after throwing six innings in the Bobcats’ 13-5 win over Barry.

Hass went 2-0 against nationally ranked players for the week to improve to 3-1 this season.

Wesleyan pair sweep honors

Wesleyan softball players Jema Bravo and Mellissa Webb made it sweep for the Wolves in Great South Athletic Conference for player and pitcher of the week.

Bravo went 17-for-26 (.654) in eight games, wtih eight runs, nine RBI and three homers.

Webb appeared in six games and went 2-3, striking out 26 in 32-1/3 innings with nine walks. She also held No. 9 Emory to four runs.

Meet and greet set for Macon Mayhem head coach

Newly opened Bowman Road restaurant Ghenghis Grill will host a meet-and-greet for Macon Mayhem head coach Kevin Kerr later this month.

The Southern Professinal Hockey League team was formed last summer, and Kerr was hired in February.

The event will be from 4-6 p.m. on April 22 at the restaurant, located at 5437 Bowman Rd., Suite 100.
