Good afternooon from a now bright and sunny Bobby Dodd Stadium. There was a little cloud cover above the city when I was driving in, but now it's breaking up as the Yellow Jackets and Blue Devils are taking the field for pregame warmups.
From my vantage point in the pressbox, there are about three yards between each field goal post and the walls they are adjacent to. So I believe we'll be going two ways for this game (just a hunch). Of course, today also marks the annual "rivalry" game for my alma mater. Northwestern is taking on Illinois at Wrigley Field in an historic contest that will be forever remembered as "The One-Way Game." Because of Wrigley's strange baseball configurations, and because of the way the field had to be situated, the teams won't be allowed to run toward the East end zone. There's just not enough room between end zone lines and the right field wall there. So only one end zone to be used there.
Two end zones here in Atlanta.
OK, not a whole heck of a lot of news to report from pregame, but here are a couple of nuggets we've already gotten:
Cone/Correy to start
~Likely as part of the Senior Day festivities, Yellow Jackets seniors Correy Earls and Kevin Cone will be starting at receiver today. Cone had three receptions last week against Miami, including a 22-yard touchdown reception that was the first of his career.
~The start will be Cone's eighth this season.
~It will be Earls' 10th of his career and second of the season. Earls is a Macon product who starred at Central before coming to Georgia Tech.
~Stephen Hill is still available, and I'd expect him to play often. Just not on that first snap.
Change on the line
~The Yellow Jackets will start an offensive line formation they've never employed this season, as Nick Claytor will be starting at tackle for Phil Smith, Austin Barrick will play on the other side. Then, at guard, Omoregie Uzzi will be joined by Jay Finch, who has been filling in for Will Jackson in times Jackson has been injured this season. Jackson was dinged up two weeks ago, but he will be available to play.
~Tech also will be donning its white jersey tops and gold pants combination, as they try to snap this three-game losing streak. In games when they've worn the combo, the Yellow Jackets are 3-0.
