The Yellow Jackets this December head to Paradise Island, Bahamas to participate in the inaugural Division I men's basketball doubleheader at the Atlantis Resort.
On Dec. 18, Georgia Tech will play Richmond in a new 4,500-seat arena that will be unveiled at the resort's conference center. A news release said appearances will be made by former All-American and current college basketball analyst Len Elmore, and that fans will have the chance to compete for high stakes prizes during events such half-court shooting contests. Payouts for such contests will go into six figures, the release said.
Joining the Yellow Jackets and Spiders will be Mississippi State and Virginia Tech.
The event is being showcased with hopes of turning it into annual eight-team showcase at the resort in future years, the news release said. This double-header is just the resort's first foray toward that endeavor.
Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Richmond each made appearances in the NCAA tournament last season, with Virginia Tech earning a berth into the NIT. The Yellow Jackets also played in an early-season invitational tournament in Puerto Rico last season before beginning the bulk of their conference schedule.
The Yellow Jackets' 2010-11 schedule includes a Dec. 7 home contest with rival Georgia and a late-November road trip to Evanston, Ill. to take on Northwestern as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Georgia Tech's full schedule has not yet been released.
