Mercer sophomore forward Jakob Gollon has been selected as the Player of the Week by the A-Sun for the week of December 5-11.
On Monday, the CollegeSportsMadness.com web site also recognized Gollon as the A-Sun’s top player in last week’s action.
During the past week, the Bears were 2-0 and improved their overall record to 7-3, which is the team’s best start since the 2004-05 season.
In the victories over Samford (83-78) and Chattanooga (67-56), Gollon averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
Gollon hit all four of his foul shots in the two games, and he is now hitting 93 percent (31-of-33) from the foul line.
After a pair of injury-shortened seasons his first two years in Macon and primarily coming off the bench last year, head coach Bob Hoffman believes the award is a fitting tribute to Gollon’s perseverance.
“Jake never stopped believing in himself and his teammates have never stopped believing in him either,” Hoffman said. “Jake’s work ethic and his studious approach to all the scouting reports and what we as a staff were teaching, is a big part of what has made him so successful this season. Even when he was injured, his mind was still absorbing all the things we put out there.
