O’Malley says Iran deal is ‘step in the right direction’

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley said Tuesday that he had not yet reviewed the Iran nuclear agreement, but considered it a step in the right direction.

“I am of the belief that a negotiated agreement provided it’s verifiable and enforceable is the best path to a nuclear-free Iran. So I think that the initial news is promising,” he said at an unrelated news conference Tuesday.

O’Malley congratulated President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry on successfully negotiating the deal and encouraged citizens and Congress to carefully review the deal.

“The bottom line in our consideration as a nation, I believe, should be whether or not in fact there are the verifiable, enforceable mechanisms in place in this deal that would prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon,” he concluded.
