Sharon B. Howard, a surgical technician from Byron, qualified Wednesday to seek the state House District 136 seat vacated by the Nov. 30 death of Republican Rep. Tony Sellier.
Howard, 39, who ran against Sellier in the Nov. 2 election, joins Judye Sellier, wife of the late representative, and Robert Dickey, a peach grower, to run for the post in the special election Feb. 15.
Judye Sellier and Dickey are Republicans. Howard is a Democrat. The special election is non-partisan, but candidates were given the option of declaring a party.
The district includes all of Crawford County and portions of Bibb, Houston, Lamar, Monroe, Peach and Upson counties. Qualifying ends at noon Friday. The Georgia Legislature reconvenes Jan. 10.
