Hartwig named chief assistant district attorney in Houston

George Hartwig, who joined the Houston County District Attorney’s Office in July 2001, was officially named Tuesday as chief assistant district attorney.

Hartwig, 50, who previously served as a senior district attorney, moves up into the position held by Jason Ashford, who is now the acting district attorney after Monday’s resignation of Kelly Burke. Burke has announced his intention to run for county commission chairman and return to private practice.

Hartwig said he plans to run for the district attorney’s position, while Ashford is expected to seek the post this year of Houston County State Court judge.

Hartwig served as the chief drug prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office. In his new role, Hartwig said he mostly will handle serious violent felonies such as murder and armed robbery.

He said he also expects to prosecute some major drug cases.

Hartwig previously practiced civil law in Macon for 10 years and also served in law enforcement in Broward County, Fla., for many years.
