Wilkinson County holds ELOST vote

Wilkinson County voters on Tuesday defeated an education local option sales tax by one vote — 526-525. The outcome, however, is still unofficial as the county is waiting on absentee military ballots. The results will be certified Friday.

Wilkinson County schools Superintendent Aaron Geter said, if passed, the ELOST will generate $14.5 million over the next five years to build a new primary school in the county. It also will generate funds to buy school buses, technology, textbooks and safety equipment.

Geter said once the new primary school is built, the county would turn its attention to making over the middle school, but those plans are eight to 10 years down the road.
