Travelers along highways near Hawkinsville, Dublin and Wrightsville might witness a unique Sept. 11 commemoration this week.
Members of the 78th Security Forces at Robins Air Force Base are participating in the 2,181-mile Ruck March to Remember.
The march started July 12 at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and will end Sept. 11 at Ground Zero in New York. The march consists of at least one airman with a ruck sack, followed by a vehicle with other airmen who swap off the marching duties throughout the day.
Security forces squadrons at 15 Air Force bases along the route are handling the march in legs. Robins airmen picked up the march in Plains on Tuesday and will march to Hawkinsville, Cochran, Dublin and Wrightsville before ending their 146-mile leg in Louisville on Saturday.
For safety reasons, at 8 p.m. each day they end the march, mark the point with a flag, then return the next morning.
