American Legion Post 3 on Thomaston Road held a Veterans Outreach event Saturday to help veterans of recent wars learn about support services available to them.
Commercial vendors and representatives of veterans agencies were on hand to give information on benefits, rehabilitation, home health care, insurance, wheelchairs and more.
Event chairman Gary Baker said outreach efforts by the American Legion and other service organizations are necessary because the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been overwhelmed by the needs of injured veterans returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Contemporary warfare and modern medical procedures have led to increased numbers of veterans who survive with lost limbs and brain injuries, he said.
Veterans who missed the outreach event can still get help by calling the Legion at 474-7799. Located at 5530 Thomaston Road, the Legion meets in the evening the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
