Jessica Bailey, Fort Valley State University’s interim president, will be one of six land grant university presidents to speak to the House Agriculture Committee on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

The speech is a part of a four-day event commemorating 125 years since the signing of the Second Morrill Act of 1890. It extended access to higher education by providing additional funds for historically black land grant universities such as Fort Valley State.

“Never before have presidents of 1890 land grant institutions been invited to speak before Congress,” Bailey said in a release. “This occasion is important because it will place our institutions in the national spotlight and allow us to showcase the great work being done at these schools.”

Bailey plans to highlight the effects of the research taking place in FVSU’s Agricultural Research Station and the outreach through FVSU’s Cooperative Extension programs.

“Research is important because it shapes public policy decisions for the future,” she said.

NEW BOOK ON INDIAN MOUNDS

Matthew Jennings, an associate professor of history at Middle Georgia State University, is releasing a pictorial history of Macon’s Ocmulgee National Monument.

“Images of America: Ocmulgee National Monument” is set for release July 27 and features vintage images that have never been published, according to a release.

Jennings first visited Macon and the Ocmulgee National Monument in 2000 during a graduate school research trip.

He teaches classes on early American history and Native American history that allow him to share his passion for Ocmulgee, the release said. Beyond his college teaching, Jennings serves as vice president of the Ocmulgee National Monument Association, an organization founded to promote the site in Middle Georgia.

A portion of the proceeds from the book will benefit the Ocmulgee National Monument Association.

MGSU REC CENTER OPENING TO PUBLIC

Middle Georgia State University is opening its recreation and wellness centers on the Macon and Cochran campuses to community memberships, according to a release.

“This is a way of reaching out to our communities,” said James Hagler, associate director of athletics and recreation. “We have great recreational facilities that probably many people who live in Cochran and Macon aren’t even aware of.”

Residents can buy individual memberships at either facility for $35 a month. The Cochran center also offers a family membership for $80 a month. The university will not offer family memberships at the Macon campus due to staffing levels.

Members must be at least 18 years old at the Macon Campus center unless they are MGSU students. At the Cochran center, family memberships only include children ages 10 and older.

Membership applications and additional details are available at www.mga.edu/wellness.

FREE APPLICATION DAY AT CGTC

Central Georgia Technical College will host a free application day Tuesday for new students for the fall semester.

Potential students can apply at the Warner Robins, Macon or Milledgeville campuses, at one of four centers in Eatonton, Forsyth, Hawkinsville or Roberta, as well as online, according to a release.

More information about enrolling, financial aid and academic programs can be found at www.centralgeorgiatech.edu or by calling (478) 988-6800.
