The Bibb County school board is scheduled to decide Thursday whether to grant a charter school permission to start up next year. A petition to open Macon Academy of Excellence was submitted by a group of Bibb County residents this year.
Some of the founding members include Charles and Monya Rutland, Trent Solomon and Clarence Thomas. Macon Academy of Excellence proposes to enroll up to 450 students systemwide on a first-come, first-served basis. It would open in August 2011.
The petition proposes the school be managed by EdFutures Inc., and focus on international core curriculum as well as character building.
Also on the school board agenda are several information items such as an annual athletic report and School Improvement Grant update.
The school board meets at 2:30 p.m. Thursday for its committee meeting to discuss the items and reconvenes at 6 p.m. to officially vote on the items. The meeting will be held at 484 Mulberry St. on the fourth floor.
