Bibb student fires starter pistol inside school gym, officials say

An Appling Middle School eighth-grader took a starter pistol from a school track meet held at Thompson Stadium on Monday, smuggled it inside the school gym and fired it in the air, school officials said.

The gun fired blanks, and no one was harmed in the incident that happened about 7:30 p.m., said Chris Floore, spokesman for the Bibb County school system.

Other students were in the gym at the time.

“We’re still trying to figure out how he got it and when he got it,” Floore said. “We’re still interviewing witnesses to see what happened.”

The student is suspended and awaiting an evidentiary hearing. Campus police are still trying to determine charges, Floore said.
