Wilkinson County election officials certified a vote Friday in which a referendum for a new education local option sales tax failed to pass by a single vote.
The measure was defeated Tuesday 526-525, but the board had to wait until Friday for any absentee ballots. None came, officials said.
The tax would have begun in 2012. School system officials were hoping to raise $14.5 million over five years to build a new primary school in the county.
