Protesters picket over superintendent's show prize

NEWNAN — Proponents of deaf and blind children promised $1 million in prize money from state schools Superintendent Kathy Cox protested at the offices of a bankruptcy trustee trying to block the groups from getting the funds.

Cox won the money on Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" in August 2008, and pledged to give the money to three public schools for deaf and blind students. In November, Cox and her husband filed for bankruptcy, claiming $3.5 million in debt.

Gary W. Brown, the bankruptcy trustee, says the prize money is part of Cox's personal income and is trying to claim the money for Cox's creditors.

Activists protested Wednesday afternoon at Brown's law office in Newnan.

The Fox Broadcasting Co. will not release the money until both parties work out an agreement.
