Nearly all of Bibb teachers were renewed for another year by the Bibb County school board Thursday. The Bibb school board has yet to announce its 2010 budget or an exact number of teachers needed to fill classrooms.
Bibb County schools Superintendent Sharon Patterson said the school system just found out this past Friday how much the state will allot for Bibb teachers in the coming school year. Economic stimulus funds are also being tallied which could pay for some teaching jobs too, she said.
“We took retirees and non-returning teachers and balanced it against our allotments for next year,” she said. “I’m hoping we’re OK.”
In March, the system said 48 teachers resigned and 31 retired although more likely came in April and May.The state allowed school systems to vote on contracts in May this year, a month later than typically allowed because of the late notice with state and federal economic stimulus funds.
All but three Bibb principals will return this fall.
