School board members sworn into office

Retired Northeast High School principal Ella Carter and Susan Sipe, a former Parent Teacher Association activist, became the newest Bibb County school board members at a swearing-in ceremony Thursday.

Carter, 71, won the District 1 seat in July’s primary election and Sipe, 56, won the District 3 seat in November.

Both start Jan. 1.

“I don’t know about excited, but I am delighted,” Carter said after the ceremony in which her friends and family presented her with pink roses. “I expect to be an integral part of the board, especially for District 1.”

Board members Susan Middleton, Tom Hudson, Gary Bechtel and Tommy Barnes, who all ran unopposed, also were sworn into office Thursday by Superior Court Judge William Self.
