Houston County Sharks win state handball championship

The Houston County Sharks are the 2016 Adapted Sports Wheelchair Handball champions. The team beat the Gwinnett Heat, 10-4, in Stockbridge in early November to claim its fifth consecutive state title and 18th title in nine years.

Handball team members are Kierra Miles, of Veterans High; Jordan Kozloski, Houston County High; Olando Hicks and Maddie Watts, Warner Robins High; Emanuel Dawson, Huntington Middle; Gavin Siens, Hilltop Elementary; Tajah Battle, Lake Joy Elementary; and Ger’Mir Gordon, Jaden Screen and Keyon Williams, Matt Arthur Elementary.

In a separate event, the Sharks organization received a Triumph of the Human Spirit Award at a ceremony in Duluth on Nov. 13. The team won the High School Team of the Year for the third year. The awards recognize Georgia individuals, groups and organizations who have made a difference in adaptive sports and recreation.
