Houston County’s school nutrition program has earned statewide recognition. It received two U.S. Department of Agriculture Best Practice State Level awards during the Georgia School Nutrition Association luncheon in October.

Houston was awarded the Increasing Student Meal Participation award for its breakfast initiatives. Students can eat breakfast for free through the Community Eligibility Provision or get a grab-and-go meal at the bus ramp, car rider lines, school hallways or in classrooms.

The district’s school nutrition program also received the Customer Service award for its program that packs student lunchboxes at some elementary schools.
