In the beginning -- about 3 in the afternoon on Aug. 4 -- a guy went into the men’s room at Barnes & Noble with a Bible. An employee at the north Macon bookstore saw the man go in. He was maybe 60 and short, with wavy gray hair, a beard and sunglasses, a Bibb County sheriff’s report noted. When he emerged from the john a few minutes later, the store employee said the Bible was nowhere to be seen. Moments later when the man left the store, apparently with the good book hidden and in tow, an alarm went off. The Bible, of an “unknown brand,” was worth about $50, the sheriff’s report said. The suspect drove away in a white Ford sedan.
