About 4 o’clock on a recent Saturday morning, a man was passed out at the wheel of a Honda Accord in downtown Macon. The car, parked with its engine running, was near the gas pumps of a Flash Foods at the intersection of College and Forsyth streets. A Bibb County sheriff’s deputy smelled alcohol and woke the driver. “I asked him how much he had to drink that night and he told me two beers,” the deputy wrote in his report of the Aug. 8 encounter. “I asked him if that was including the beer that was still in the cup holder in his car.” When the driver, 37, said there wasn't anything in the cup holder, the deputy pointed to a cup of beer there. “Oh, that,” said the driver, whose blood-alcohol level was said to have registered twice the legal limit.
