Teen alcohol use suspected in deadly Putnam County accident

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in Friday night’s accident that killed a 15-year-old from Eatonton.

“Evidence at the scene was indicative alcohol may have been a contributing factor,” Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Monday.

Sills said a detective secured a search warrant to draw blood from the driver, 17-year-old Donovan Cole Turner, of Eatonton, who was seriously injured in the crash and is being treated at Medical Center, Navicent Health.

Turner was behind the wheel of a 1998 Jeep Wrangler that went off Little River Trail and flipped at about 10:45 p.m. Friday.

Thomas Roberts, 15, was killed in the crash and Ryan Davis Loggins, who is also a 15-year-old from Eatonton, was injured.

Sills expects blood test results in two to three months and then will determine if criminal charges are warranted in Roberts’ death.
