McRae man charged with rape on Little Ocmulgee State Park trail

A 32-year-old McRae man was arrested hours after a woman reported being raped Thursday afternoon at Little Ocmulgee State Park.

The woman called Wheeler-Telfair E911 shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday to report she had been sexually assaulted while running on the trail, according to a GBI news release.

Jerry Kennedy, 32, who lives in a Parsonage Street apartment in McRae, was identified as a suspect after witness interviews and a crime scene examination.

Kennedy faces multiple felony charges and is being held at the Wheeler County jail, the release stated.

The GBI obtained arrest warrants charging Kennedy with rape, criminal attempt to commit sodomy, criminal attempt to commit murder, false imprisonment, kidnapping and aggravated assault.

Wheeler County Sheriff Maurice Johnson lauded the cooperation of witnesses in leading to the timely arrest.
