Macon woman cashed deceased mother’s workers’ comp checks, state alleges

A Macon woman illegally cashed nearly two dozen of her mother’s workers’ compensation checks after the woman died, state officials allege.

April Renee Reed, 29, has been charged with 23 felony counts of theft by deception in the case, according to the enforcement division of the Georgia State Board of Workers’ Compensation.

Warrants were issued for Reed’s arrest in June 2014, and the Georgia State Patrol arrested her April 2 during a traffic stop, according to a news release from the state agency. She was taken to the Bibb County jail.

Reed’s mother, Barbara Jean Reed, died in May 2013. April Reed did not contact the agency afterward, instead forging her mother’s name on the subsequent workers’ comp indemnity checks and cashing them, according to the release.
