Teen charged with murder in Shurling Drive shooting

A 16-year-old is facing a murder charge in connection with a shooting death Friday.

Demarcus Smith of Macon is charged with murder and participation in criminal street gang activity, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office release. He is charged as an adult.

He allegedly shot Kemani Ridgeway, 20, during a confrontation on Tredway Drive near Shurling Drive at about 4:15 p.m. Ridgeway was pronounced dead at Medical Center, Navicent Health, shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.

Smith was picked up by investigators at about 8:20 p.m. and taken in for questioning. He was charged with murder after Ridgeway died. He was taken to the Regional Youth Detention Center.

It was Bibb’s second homicide of the year and second in a week.

Investigators said Ridgeway was driving with his girlfriend when he stopped to talk to three males near an abandoned building. An argument ensued, someone fired shots and the three fled.

Ridgeway’s girlfriend drove him to a nearby gas station and called for help.
