Inmate indicted in Central State Prison death

Bibb County grand jurors indicted a Central State Prison inmate Tuesday on allegations he stomped a fellow inmate, killing him in March.

Simon Coleman, 59, is charged with murder and aggravated assault, according to an indictment filed in Bibb County Superior Court.

The indictment alleges Coleman, an inmate serving a life sentence for murder, stomped Jeffery Lee McDonald "with a shod foot" and beat him with his hands March 14.

Coleman had been in prison 29 years at the time of the assault, according to state prison records.

The attack occurred in a community bathroom at the prison on Fulton Mill Road, according to an arrest warrant.

McDonald, a convicted child molester, died about two weeks after the altercation. He sustained a closed head injury.

Coleman is being held at Augusta State Medical Prison, according to jail records.
