Macon man charged with firing gun at Mercer police officer

A Macon man was arrested after allegedly shooting at a Mercer University police officer early Thursday morning.

According to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release, Bibb deputies arrested Kimyatus Jaque Hamilton, 33, of Rocky Court, on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, entering auto and a probation violation. He is currently being held at the Bibb County jail.

During the incident, a Mercer student was walking to his 1994 Honda Civic on Prince Street about 3:30 a.m. when he saw Hamilton inside the car. The student went inside a nearby building and called Mercer police.

When the officer responded to the scene, Hamilton exited the vehicle and fired a shot at the officer, according to the news release. The officer, who wasn’t struck, got back in his police vehicle and searched the area for the suspect.

A Bibb County deputy also responded to the call and spotted Hamilton on Mercer University Drive near Elm Street at Jackson Street. Both the deputy and the campus officer apprehended Hamilton.
