Autopsy delayed on body found in Crawford County

A Taylor County family waiting since December to find out what happened to a loved one will have to wait at least another day.

The GBI has scheduled an autopsy Wednesday on the body of a white male found Saturday afternoon in a shallow grave in Crawford County.

Authorities are trying to determine whether the remains found off Fairplay Hill Road belong to James Dudley “Trey” Byers III, 22, of Taylor County.

Five other autopsies were already scheduled for Tuesday and a more detailed analysis of the Crawford County remains will be needed so the procedure was put off until Wednesday, according to a GBI news release.

The autopsy is expected to take most of the day, the release stated.

Byers disappeared Dec. 19 after leaving a Fort Valley home with 21-year-old Cody Daniel Jackson of Musella. Jackson’s burned truck was found hours later near the Crawford County landfill not far from where the body was discovered.

Jackson has been charged with murder in the case.
