GBI Crime Lab officials in Decatur learned the identity of a victim of a Wilkinson County drowning late Thursday afternoon, and they hope to release the man’s identity Friday after informing the family.
Wilkinson County Coroner William H. Matthews Sr. said he’d been waiting to hear whether the drowning victim found Wednesday is a man who went missing Sunday. GBI officials were trying to match DNA and dental records.
“There has been a gentlemen that’s been missing here since Sunday, but we’re not sure,” he said.
The man was found in an old clay hole, where clay was mined years ago, near the intersection of U.S. 441 and Ga. 57 just outside Irwinton. The pond is about 5 acres, but someone could accidentally stumble into it, Matthews said.
The body was not dressed for swimming and was found wearing pants, a shirt and socks.
Earlier this month, two Wilkinson County brothers drowned on a fishing trip in a clay hole off Ga. 18.
