Police arrest man for snatching cash from Dollar General register

A Macon police officer caught a suspected robber Friday afternoon with $90 in his hat.

According to a news release from the Macon Police Department, Kevin Betts, 31, was shopping about 4 p.m. Friday at Dollar General at 2480 Shurling Drive.

While Betts waited in line at the checkout counter, he saw the clerk open the cash register for the customer ahead of him. Betts snatched money from the open register and fled the store, according to the release.

Officers Jesse Thompson and Sean Story responded to the robbery and searched a trail that ran through a wooded lot.

Thompson arrested Betts and recovered $90 that Betts had in his hat.

Betts showed no weapon during the robbery, which was recorded by a store video camera. No one was injured in the incident.

Betts, of a Blue Bell Court address, was charged with robbery by sudden snatching and was being held with a $3,500 bond Saturday at the Bibb County jail, according to the jail’s Web site.
