Hearing set for Dublin student who took gun to school Monday

The 15-year-old Dublin High School student accused of taking a handgun to school Monday appeared in a juvenile court hearing Tuesday, according to the Laurens County District Attorney’s Office.

A judge ordered that the boy be detained at the Eastman Youth Detention Center.

Another hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday.

If the teen enters a not guilty plea at that hearing next week, a trial date will be scheduled, according to the district attorney’s office.

Dublin police have said the boy was involved in an off-campus argument and took the gun to school for protection. He was moving the weapon from his waistband to a backpack when it went off, police said.

A bullet fragment ricocheted off the floor and struck a 17-year-old student in the leg, but it didn’t penetrate his clothing.
