Macon votes to move forward with joint drug task force

Sponsored by Macon City Council members James Timley, Larry Schlesinger and Nancy White, the council passed a resolution — 13-0 — asking Macon Mayor Robert Reichert to negotiate with Bibb County to re-establish a joint task force to combat the sale and use of illegal drugs.

The Macon Police Department and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office once operated a joint drug task force but disbanded in 1995. Since then, the police and sheriff’s office have operated independently of each other.

“We have two fine law enforcement agencies here in Macon,” Schlesinger said, “But two heads are better than one. I see every advantage in putting these two heads together.”

Councilmen Erick Erickson and Mike Cranford were not present for the vote.
