Fugitive wanted in N.C. caught in Macon

Members of the Southeast Regional Task Force arrested a wanted fugitive in Macon early Monday morning.

According to a news release, law enforcement officers were tipped off that Jaunton Gregory Carter, of Charlotte, N.C., was hiding in the Pio Nono Avenue area Sunday night. Investigators spotted Carter near a car he had stolen, according to the release. As he tried to flee in the vehicle, he damaged one of the tires and fled on foot.

Law enforcement officers and Macon police searched the area with tracking dogs from the Jones County Sheriff’s Office and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter. Carter was found hiding under a house on Glendale Avenue about 4 a.m. and taken to the Bibb County jail to await being taken back to North Carolina.

Carter had active warrants in Charlotte for first degree rape, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of sexual battery.
