Burned body in Cordele identified

Authorities have identified a burned body found last month in a Cordele cotton field.

The GBI said in a news release late Wednesday that the body found inside a smoldering sport utility vehicle on Aug. 26 is Jerry Lee Lawrence, 51, of South Joe Wright Drive in Cordele.

The morning after Lawrence was discovered, Harold Reese Jr. was found dead in a cotton field near the burned-out SUV.

The GBI release said four people have now been charged in connection with Lawrence and Reese’s deaths.

On Sept. 4, the GBI and Crisp County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jennifer McLeod, 23, and Elizabeth Davis, 48.

Davis was charged with concealing a death, and McLeod was charged with felony murder.

A week earlier, on Aug. 28, Corey and Amin Dennis were both charged with felony murder in the case.

A search of their vehicle and residence led to the charges, according to the release.

The investigation remains open, and anyone with information in the case should call the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office at (229) 276-2600 or the GBI’s Americus office at (229) 931-2439.
