Two arrested in suspicious blaze in Roberta

Authorities have arrested two men in connection with a suspicious fire April 28 at a strip shopping center next to the Piggly Wiggly in Roberta.

Crawford County Sheriff Lewis Walker said the suspects, whose names were not released, were taken into custody Friday in a neighboring county and will be transported to Crawford County.

Walker declined to comment further on the case because it is being handled by the Georgia Fire Marshal’s Office.

Twice in one week, firefighters were called to the stores on East Cursell Street. Crews were able to save the shopping center structure but four of the five stores were damaged, including severe damage at the Tailgate Sports Grill, according to authorities.

The Security Finance office, a coin-operated laundry, a hair salon and a vacant building also were affected.
