Houston deputies seize drugs, guns, cash

Houston County sheriff’s deputies seized drugs, guns and cash after a routine traffic stop Thursday morning on Interstate 75.

Mark Michael Jones Jr., 36, of Orange Park, Fla., and Craig Shorter, 20, of Miami, were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a fully-automated weapon, said Houston County sheriff’s Sgt. Clay Chambers.

Shorter, who has a prior burglary conviction out of Florida, also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Chambers said.

Chambers said he pulled over a southbound 2009 Dodge Avenger driven by Jones on the interstate at the 136 mile marker near Perry about 10:25 a.m. for following too closely.

Chambers said he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car, and he and Sgt. Wayne Mitchell searched the car.

The deputies seized 18 grams of marijuana, with a street value of about $65, $600 in cash and five weapons, including four handguns that had been reported as stolen, Chambers said.
