Macon man gets eight years in DUI death

A 23-year-old Macon man has been sentenced to serve eight years in prison after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide Tuesday.

Ian Andrew Nichols, of Goodall Mill Road, was driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana May 17, 2008, when his car collided with another car near Hartley Bridge and School roads in south Bibb County, said Elizabeth Bobbitt, a Bibb County assistant district attorney.

The driver of the other car, 21-year-old Brittney Higdon of Trails End Drive, died about an hour after the crash, Bobbitt said.

Toxicology tests performed from a blood sample taken from Nichols about an hour after the crash showed his blood alcohol content was 0.122, Bobbitt said. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.

Nichols also tested positive for marijuana, she said.

He was working as a Domino’s Pizza deliveryman at the time of the crash.

Following his prison sentence, Nichols also must serve seven years on probation, Bobbitt said.
