GBI probing mysterious death of Wrightsville man

The GBI is trying to determine how a Wrightsville man suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in connection with a house fire early Monday morning.

After smoke was reported at about 3 a.m. firefighters and rescue personnel arrived to find 73-year-old Sammie Lee Hawkins with a gunshot wound to the head on the front porch at 22 Shurling Drive, said Greg Harvey, special agent in charge of the GBI’s Eastman office.

Hawkins was initially taken to Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin and transferred to The Medical Center of Central Georgia where he died at about 10 p.m. Monday, Harvey said.

Investigators are trying to determine whether Hawkins or someone else fired the shot that killed him.

“We’re not ruling out any possibility at this time,” Harvey said.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, which did not cause significant damage to the home, Harvey said.

Anyone with information that would help the investigation is asked to call the GBI at (478) 374-6988.
