Putnam sheriff to file charges in accident that killed Macon architect

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Wednesday he will file misdemeanor charges against a woman involved in the death of Macon architect Tinsley Matthews.

Matthews, 51, was killed Tuesday when his car collided with a motor home on U.S. 441 just north of Eatonton.Sills said Matthews was rear-ended by Sarah Schuman, 79, of Putnam County, which caused his car to go into oncoming traffic. Matthews’ car collided with the motor home driven by Dennis Burleson, 61, of Marion, N.C.

Sills said the charges are pending until Schuman gets out of the hospital. She sustained broken bones in her face, he said.

She will be charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree. Sills said the maximum punishment for any traffic misdemeanors is a fine of up to $1,000 or 12 months in jail.

Sills said there was no evidence of any drinking or drug use in the accident.

“This is the least charge there can be, and the only charge we can charge,” Sills said.
