Family Dollar in Macon robbed

Macon police are investigating an armed robbery Friday at the Family Dollar discount store, 1735 Shurling Drive.

A man entered the business shortly after 8 p.m. displaying a handgun and demanded money, police spokeswoman Sgt. Melanie Hofmann said.

He fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. He was last seen running behind the store toward Ollie Drive, according to witnesses.

No injuries were reported in the robbery.

Hofmann said a Macon police officer was involved in a vehicle wreck on Shurling Drive as he was attempting to respond to the robbery. A Chevrolet Suburban pulled into the path of the officer’s patrol car, causing the accident. The officer, the driver of the Suburban and three passengers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, Hofmann said.

Anyone with information on the robbery at the Family Dollar is asked to call Macon police at (478) 751-7500 or Macon Regional CrimeStoppers at (877) 68-CRIME.
