A 26-year-old booked into the Houston County jail Thursday night is charged with vehicular homicide in the head-on crash that killed a Crisp County sheriff sergeant’s wife five months ago.

Donn Kelvin Smith, of Rentz, also is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, hit and run, reckless driving and an open container violation in the June 3 crash that killed Marci Thompson.

Smith was driving north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 near the border of Houston and Dooly counties when his 2013 Chrysler 200 collided with Thompson’s 2016 Nissan Versa.

The Nissan overturned and landed on its roof by a guardrail in the emergency lane. Then it caught fire.

Thompson, 42, had to be cut from the vehicle. She was flown by helicopter to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, where she died early the next day.

Smith, an Army vehicle mechanic at Fort Benning, was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Thompson, of Cordele, was married to and had children with Crisp County sheriff’s Sgt. Al Thompson. She worked as a charge nurse at Summerhill Senior Living Center in Perry, according to her obituary.

Smith was booked at the jail about 5:30 p.m.
