Accused Peach County deputy killer to appear in court

Ralph Stanley Elrod Jr., the Byron man charged with murder in the shooting deaths of two Peach County deputies, is set to appear in a courtroom for the first time Wednesday afternoon.

Elrod, 57, is set to appear in front of a Macon Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge for his first appearance hearing in the Nov. 6 fatal shooting of deputy Daryl Smallwood at 2 p.m.

Elrod, who had been hospitalized since being shot in the incident, was booked into the Bibb County jail Tuesday afternoon.

Superior Court Judge Howard Simms went to the hospital Nov. 8 to preside over Elrod’s first appearance hearing on a murder charge relating to the shooting death of Sgt. Patrick Sondron.

Sondron died soon after the Nov. 6 shooting. Smallwood died Nov. 8. Elrod wasn’t served a murder warrant relating to Smallwood’s death until his discharge from the hospital.
