There will be no local representative in the GHSA Class AAAAA baseball playoffs after Houston County, Warner Robins and Northside each lost first round Region 2-AAAAA tournament series’ games last week.
Houston County, the defending state champions, lost game one against Lakeside before winning the second game of Thursday’s double-header by a 1-0 final despite being no-hit in the contest. That victory forced a decisive game three on Saturday, which the Bears dropped 4-1. Houston County scored just two runs in 21 innings against Lakeside pitching in the series.
Warner Robins and Northside were both swept in their region series. The Demons fell 14-2 and 10-3 finals against Evans, while the Eagles were beaten 10-0 and 14-1 by Greenbrier. Greenbrier pitcher and University of Georgia signee Adam Sasser threw a no-hitter in game one and also homered.
BYRD COMMITS TO NORTH CAROLINA
Veterans quarterback Logan Byrd made a verbal commitment to the North Carolina Tarheels on April 8 after making a decision to reconsider a pledge he previously made to Virginia Tech last year.
Byrd added offers from Kansas State, Arkansas and Kentucky before ultimately choosing North Carolina.
The junior is considered a 3-star prospect by 247Sports.com and is the No. 19 pro-style prospect in the country for the class of 2016.
Veterans opens its season on Aug. 27 against Houston County at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
