PREP SPORTS NOTEBOOK: Houston teams fall in baseball playoffs

There will be no local representative in the GHSA Class AAAAA baseball playoffs after Houston County, Warner Robins and Northside each lost first round Region 2-AAAAA tournament series’ games last week.

Houston County, the defending state champions, lost game one against Lakeside before winning the second game of Thursday’s double-header by a 1-0 final despite being no-hit in the contest. That victory forced a decisive game three on Saturday, which the Bears dropped 4-1. Houston County scored just two runs in 21 innings against Lakeside pitching in the series.

Warner Robins and Northside were both swept in their region series. The Demons fell 14-2 and 10-3 finals against Evans, while the Eagles were beaten 10-0 and 14-1 by Greenbrier. Greenbrier pitcher and University of Georgia signee Adam Sasser threw a no-hitter in game one and also homered.


Veterans quarterback Logan Byrd made a verbal commitment to the North Carolina Tarheels on April 8 after making a decision to reconsider a pledge he previously made to Virginia Tech last year.

Byrd added offers from Kansas State, Arkansas and Kentucky before ultimately choosing North Carolina.

The junior is considered a 3-star prospect by and is the No. 19 pro-style prospect in the country for the class of 2016.

Veterans opens its season on Aug. 27 against Houston County at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.


Khayla Owens of the Veterans Warhawks signed a basketball scholarship with Georgia Southwestern last Wednesday.

The senior post player was a four-year varsity member and helped Veterans to the GHSA class-AAAA final four this season.

She leaves the program as the all-time career leader in points with 779 and was named to the all-region team.

Owens also is a standout forward for the Warhawks soccer team that is currently ranked No. 5 in class AAAA and is unbeaten this season.

Veterans lost in the championship game last year.
