For me, the best part about Christmas is the Christmas lights.
Which is actually sort of odd -- since my house doesn’t have the over the top Christmas light display that I adore.
Actually, neither did the house I grew up in. The day after school got out for Christmas vacation, we were in the station wagon headed to Alabama for the holidays. Putting up a bunch of decorations didn’t make sense. It also would have conflicted with the generations-old family adage that Christmas decorations up after the New Year bring a year’s worth of bad luck.
So I depend on y’all to give me my annual dose of Christmas lights, and with that responsibility comes our annual Best Lights in Houston County contest.
I have been doing this for years and the rules are simple. If you want your house considered for the Best Lights award, email me or call with your address so I can ride by and check out your lights. Of course, you can nominate a friend or neighbor as well. My family rides around and chooses what we think are the best lights in Houston County. We will print the list here in a couple of weeks.
Along with the incredible privilege of being able to tell your friends and family that Alline Kent said I had the best lights in Houston County, each year I offer prizes to the winners.
Callaway Gardens hosts Fantasy in Lights, which has about eight million lights stretching for more than five miles, divided into holiday scenes that feature music. Before or after your ride through Fantasy in Lights, there is Robin Lake where the Christmas Village awaits, with shopping, food and Santa Claus. There also are two scenes on Robin Lake Beach near the Christmas Village that are both narrated, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and The Nativity.
Ticket prices for Fantasy in Lights vary depending on the night and the age group, but children 5 and younger are always admitted for free. Callaway Gardens is in Pine Mountain. For more information about Fantasy in Lights, visit www.callawaygardens.com or call 1-800-CALLAWAY.
As an extra special treat this year, everyone in the top 10 will receive an autographed copy of the brand new Christmas song “Christmas Time to Me.” by one of the fastest rising artists in country music and Warner Robins’ own, Colby Dee. Colby Dee, who wrote the song, premiered the video last week at a performance here in Warner Robins. The video is available to watch on Colby Dee’s website www.colbydee.com and is available on iTunes.
My family and I will be riding around checking out lights in the next week, so if you want your home to be considered, let me know.
