A longtime state trooper is the new public safety director for the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter.
Elbert Slappy Jr., the former assistant post commander in Cordele, was sworn in Friday as the public safety director by Houston County Sheriff Cullen Talton, according to a release.
Slappy served 24 years with the Georgia State Patrol, including several years at the GSP post in Perry.
For the past 15 years, Slappy has worked closely with the fairgrounds coordinating traffic and gate positions for the Georgia National Fair.
Slappy is a graduate of Fort Valley State University.
