Warner Robins man in Augusta burn center after apartment fire late Monday

A Warner Robins man is at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta after suffering severe smoke inhalation in an apartment fire on South Houston Lake Road late Monday.

Firefighters rescued 54-year-old Laffey Statom from Richmond Apartments after 11 p.m., said Tabitha Pugh, public information officer for the Warner Robins Police Department.

Statom was rushed to Houston Healthcare to be stabilized for his overnight transfer by ambulance to Augusta, Pugh said.

Neighbors heard his smoke detector going off but could not get to him due to the heavy smoke and fire, Pugh said.

Capt. James Franklin, public information officer for the Warner Robins Fire Department, said the fire started on the man’s couch in the living room. The victim was rescued from an upstairs bedroom.

Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire that heavily damaged the living room and caused heat and smoke damage in the rest of the two-story unit.
